Things to see and do in Portland, Maine

Things to see and do in Portland, Maine

My hubby and I took a recent trip to Boston and while we were there we took a day trip to Maine.  Boston to Portland is an easy drive to make, just under 2 hours.  We crammed quite a bit in a small window of time to get back to Boston not too late. Here are few of the things to see and do in Portland, Maine when you have a short day trip like we did.

Lobster Cruise

Maine is known for lobster. If you love eating it and have an interest in how the lobstering process works, going on a lobster cruise maybe just for you.  We were fortunate enough get a cruise with Lucky Catch. Our tour went around to Seal Rock (Halfway Rock) where we got to see a few harbor seals. The tour takes its guest to the different lobster traps and teaches how to measure the haul and bait the traps.  Not only do the tours teach about the process of catching lobster, but you also reserve a tour of the harbor, learn a little history and get to see some natural wonders. If catching lobster isn't your thing, there is no shortage of other harbor tours that offer scenic views and information that may be more your speed.

Portland Head Light & Fort Williams Park

In the area of Cape Elizabeth is Portland Head Light and Fort Williams Park. This picture perfect location is great for views of the ocean, communing with nature, picnicking with the family, and learning a bit of history. Portland Head Light is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and was built at the directive of George Washington. Fort Williams Park, which houses the historic lighthouse, encompasses the now decommissioned and partially demolished US Army Base.

DiMillo's on the Water

DiMillo's on the Water is a floating restaurant, created from a former ferry.  This a great place to experience the harbor and great food.  The restaurant boasts 2 outdoor decks to get the full harbor experience. You can experience Maine lobster from this restaurant of course, but if you're not in to cracking shells - be sure to order the "lazy lobster". All the meat and no shell.

Victoria Mansion is a national historic landmark.  This is a definite stop for any architecture buff. The home was originally built in 1860 and features a deep history and gorgeous architecture details. The mansion features a museum with active programing from theme tours, discussion groups, public lectures, and special events / performances.
